Intermezzo

I-0: Compilation of citations

As said, whether or not the first pictures and thus also the first human drawings in ontogeny are "universal" or "cultural" is still a matter of debate. In this Intermezzo, a reader with a selection of citations is compiled in order to illustrate the entire range of positions taken.

As mentioned in the Introduction, several authors afford overviews and discuss the general matter of so-called "cross-cultural" aspects of early drawings in ontogeny and of early human figure drawings; see, e.g., Richter (2001, part 1), Golomb (2002, 2004, chapter 10), Cox (2005, chapter 10), Jolley (2010, chapter 9).
